"Lilah"
This picture taken by Diamondavid - year 2009.
She was giving him a hard time LOL!
But' They LOVE each other Hehe!
~~~~~~
This beautiful white pure bred boxer has lived with me since her master,
Joe Carter, and I married in 2002.
Her AKC registered name is Delila, but she is nicknamed Lilah.
She was born in June of the year 1999. As a young dog she sure was a handful.
But then she was a pup, full of life, into everything, and barked at everything.
She is still a handful, even though she will be eleven years old in June.
She first lived in town with her master, and they had
a fenced in yard for her so she could romp and play freely.
When she moved here, she had complete freedom of the mountain to roam.
About the most difficult for her to adjust to was living with my Hollyberry.
Holly was my small black and white Lhasa Apso.
And since this was Holly's home,
Lilah had to accept that she could not eat Holly's food or take over.
Holly was not the only animal Lilah would encounter over the years.
She has seen or heard every kind of
wild life we have here. Deer, birds, woodpeckers, squirrels,
wild turkeys, porcupines, black bears,
opossums, groundhogs, and even stray cats.
The picture above where she is playing with a log, had a particular
scent to it which is why she was growling
at it and rolling it around.
The scent on it was of a black bear, who had marked his territory here,
by ripping the bark off one of our trees.
My Joe had cut the tree down and into logs for our fireplace.
You may be wondering if she ever came face to face
with a black bear, and the answer is several times.
Well I am not sure about face to face,
but Lilah saw the back ends of them when she would chase them.
LOL!!
When she first came here and we left her out
one night, she went tearing around the house,
barking fiercely, and we could not
figure what riled her.
At that time we did not have motion lights
around the house. So we turned on the spotlights
' AND WHOA '
We saw her running down through the yard,
and a black bear right in front of her.
But there was another problem,
because there was also
a black bear under our platform feeder
that was atop a ten foot cast iron boiler tube pole.
Well the windows and doors went flying open
and we yelled at that bear to git and called Lilah in the house.
It was then we learned we would have to check all sides of the house for bears.
We have since put up motion lights on all sides of the house,
and Lilah gets our attention when they are around.
She has excellent hearing.
There was one critter she did come face to face with twice. A porcupine.
Both times we had to take her to the veterinary emergency
hospital to have quills removed from her face.
Why? Because these incidents happened during the evening hours
and the veterinary office was closed.
She didnt learn the first time not to go after it.
Mr Quills as we used to call him, had been visiting here
for ten to twelve years. In the winter of 2008,
he would come in under our back porch steps
and sleep there where it was dry and a bit warm.
Then one evening we watched him struggle through a couple inches of snow,
and then we knew that this would be the last time we see him.
She stands and walks very proud. She also loves to go for rides in the car.
Before I met Joe he used to take her in his pick-up truck.
And she did when they moved here UNTIL
she got a couple of rides in the car. From that time
on she refused to jump in the truck.
After all, what is nicer then a whole back seat to herself.
GGEeeeeshhhhh!
She loves to go for walks, but it took some leash training for her
not to pull us half way across the country.
When we would go swimming in the creek, she would go in the water
but she didn't care for it too much, and would walk back to shore.
Daily she gets her exercise chasing squirrels off the feeders,
but five minutes later they are back, tantalizing her,
and the chase starts all over.
Lilah loves people, and loves to play with the grandchildren.
What she doesn't like and will absolutely not tolerate
are other dogs, or cats. So we must keep a firm
grip on her when going to the veterinarian office.
The hardest part for her and for us to deal with,
were the operations on her ear, and three operations
on her right front leg for cancer.
She also has arthritis in her hips. Then in August
of the year 2009, she became very ill.
All in all she was to the vet emergency room twice,
saw five veterinarians, in various locations that we
traveled distances to, had two ultra sounds,
and several EKG's because she was diagnosed with
heart arrythmia. Finally she had two large tumors
removed from her belly. She was monitored through night.
The pathologists did tests three times on those tumors,
and they were not cancerous, Thank God.
One was the size of a six inch pine cone. The other
one was the size of a walnut and attached slightly to her her pancreas.
Her primary veterinarian who did the surgery, was absolutely blown away,
when right after she came to from anesthesia,
she yanked her catheter out, stood up
and wanted outside to do her business.
Several of the veterinarians were surprised by her spirit,
and her determination and said wow, she might be ten years old,
but she acts like a young dog and looks
in good condition for an older dog.
I wanted to write about her because she has become a friend
and an on-line pet to so many people.
I have talked about her so much and friends
are always asking about her, and sending her hugs,
and pats on head, and hoping she is doing well.
One email friend even sent her some treats for Christmas.
Oh, you should have seen her when that package came.
We had no idea what was in it and set it under the Christmas tree.
She went after that package and was tossing it around,
sniffing and pawing it, till finally we had to put it up.
Then when I talked to my friend, we found out why
she was so determined to get at it.
Christmas morning she had her present and the chewies were gone within minutes LOL!
We have been faced with a situation and not sure what the
outcome will be. The cancer on her leg is growing back
and because of her heart, the doctor does not feel
it advisable right now to operate.
She is so active, and playful, though tires out a bit quicker
after all she is getting old.
Joe is accepting the fact that one day,
we will have to decide on a risky operation, and
pray that she will make it.
But if it is time for her to cross the Rainbow bridge,
we will have these memories of her.
UPDATE ON LEG CANCER - April 11th, 2010
Lilah's cancer tumors were getting very large,
so our veterinarian sent an EKG of her heart over the phone,
to two animal cardiologists. The three of them decided
it was time to do her surgery and not wait
untill the end of summer as originally planned.
On April 7th, she had her surgery and all went well.
She came home same day as surgery. Her bandage
has been changed at vet office, and she is back to
guarding the mountain. She will have bandage
completely off in a few more days.
A friend of ours calls her the million dollar dog,
but she is worth every penny.
The title of this song: "A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words".
And the pictures of her, shows her character.
She is stead_fast and always by our side. She also owns our sofa,
and sleeps in the bed in spare bedroom. LOL!
SHE RULES!
I'm a BOXER - what can I say
We are a commanding breed
