ABOUT BLACK BEARS
And THEIR VISITS TO OUR HOME

Bears like to hang out, and
visit here, at our Penns Creek mountain home,
in central Pennsylvania
quite often.
It may come as a surprise to some
that the black bear whose name
often appears in the same sentence,
with hibernation is not a true hibernator.
While a dozing bear's body
temperature, respiration and
heartbeat may drop slightly,
a resting bruin can be
quickly aroused from its deep sleep.

Black bears may as readily drop into their
winter stupors above ground,
beneath dense rhododendrons or
in caves excavated under
or next to deadfalls.

No matter where they drift into
their long winter's nap,
they first devour roughage, that creates
"fecal plug," preventing defacation.
Bears are also able to recycle urine,
a feature which scientists are now
studying in hopes of using their findings to cure
patients suffering from kidney diseases.

Our black bears visit
frequently, year around.
We know there are at least five of them,

They are fun to watch, at a distance.
One is a big guy, standing seven
foot tall on hind legs.
One has a white vee crest on it's chest.

Three summers ago, we watched a
momma bear standing near her twin cubs,
while they played in the open field behind us.
They continue to visit here.

One severe winter we
dropped them apples, when
they would be down below our windows,
which are fifteen foot high up,
from ground.

Then there was another winter,
when they stopped by and enjoyed, left
over Christmas cookies, and fruit cake,
we put out on big round
spool table for the birds, and small critters.

Life here on the mountain gives us much joy.
And God paints such awesome colors
through all these mountains, during all four seasons.
And the wildlife, though it can be dangerous at times,
are awesome survivors.
We have a wide variety of life here; wild turkey,
fox, deer of course.
A porcupine who visits almost daily,
a skunk or two, who leave their "aroma".

Then there is the ground hog who
wanted desperately to live in
our garage, but we
couldn't allow him to dwell there.
He was quite upset about this,
and gave us a hard time,
when we chased him away.
And not the least of critters here,
are the opossums, coyotes, bobcats, bats,
woodpeckers, turtles, birds and snakes.

We choose to live here in THEIR WORLD.
This is their home,
and we respect them.
Here is where Joe and I will stay
till God calls us home.
