"The BEAR VERSUS "US" "THE GAMES BEGIN" July 21st., 2008 This morning my daughter Beth, who had stayed overnight with us, and me were busy talking while enjoying a cup of coffee. We were awed by the beauty of the mountain, tall oaks, flowing pines, and lacy fern covering the ground. We laughed at the acrobatic antics of the squirrels, and chipmunks with cheeks filled with seed, diving into their holes. We were mesmorized by all the different birds swooping in to get bird seed. The humming birds dive bombing each other at the nectar feeders.
I also noticed something didn't look right, and then I spied what was not the way it should be. A steel shepherd's hook we use for hanging sunflower seed feeders, was leaning way over, and the feeders on the ground. We went out and checked the feeders, only to find one of them was missing. The other feeder had the steel handle pulled out but the feeder itself was okay.
Most of our feeders are squirrel proof, but as you can imagine, none of them are bear proof. LOL!
We didn't have time to go looking for the missing feeder because Beth had to leave to go home, and I had a doctor's appointment.
When I came home I went up into the mountain to see if I could find the feeder but to no avail. So when Joe came home from work, we both hiked more of the mountain but again could not find it. We will have to wait till closer to fall when the beautiful intricate Royal fern begins it's winter dormancy. And in hopes we find it before the fall leaves begin to cover the ground. What we did find while looking around the property, was that a bear also swiped a long feeder off our ten foot heavy iron pole. This has brought us to the conclusion there were several bears here. Why? Over the last several years we have watched the bears and some of their habits. One of the bears likes to haul it's goodies up into the mountain. Joe has found some of our feeders, or suet holders some half mile or more away. And one of the other bears likes to haul it's goodies down into the woods below us. And this is exactly where Joe found the feeder from the ten foot pole. The S hook that holds the feeder in place was missing, but the cap to the feeder laid on the ground. So all is in tact. So for now we are out one twenty dollar feeder, but we did replace it with a new one. Till the next story time >>>>>
